The Stanground Academy Art department, aims to deliver a balanced, high-quality art & design programme that will challenge, inspire, and enable every pupil to thrive and achieve above their expectations. Our aim is for every pupil to develop, understand and learn how art has contributed to history, culture and the wider, world whilst enabling them to experiment, invent, investigate, and create their own works. Students will gain transferable critical thinking and analytical skills that will help them to succeed throughout their lives.

CURRICULUM INTENT - DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

At Stanground Academy we believe that Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on STEM subjects to showcase cross-curricular knowledge. Students are taught the importance of cookery and will apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill and the Academy Garden allows our students to gain hands-on experience of how food can be grown locally, affordably and in a limited space to feed themselves and others, now, and later in life, with the aim of instilling a genuine passion for cooking. The culture of the Design and Technology department provides students with the means to express themselves and promote positive wellbeing by challenging them to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

CURRICULUM INTENT

Our Citizenship curriculum aims to give all students an increased awareness of what Citizenship is and how to become thoughtful, active citizens who will contribute to the Stanground and wider communities.

Students will develop deeper knowledge of democracy, government and law, and develop skills to create sustained and reasoned arguments, present various viewpoints and plan practical citizenship actions to benefit society.

Citizenship Studies at Stanground reflects current issues, questions and debates; allowing students to access the main issues of the day and form opinions based on deeper knowledge and understanding of those issues and the impacts they have on modern society.  They will be given the opportunity to become confident public speakers who advocate on the behalf of others, and potentially have a real effect on their local communities.

Geographers at Stanground Academy will have knowledge and understanding on how people and the physical environment interact and their responsibility to be a positive global citizen

As a subject we want to ensure students gain an understanding of how humans and the physical world interact linked to the world we live in, including up-to-date global affairs and issues. We will impress on our students the importance and of geography in the wider world outside their geography lessons, making cross curricular links and life beyond the classroom.

Throughout a student’s geographical journey at Stanground Academy the curriculum will embody our ASPIRE values striving for academic excellence to provide a world-class education enabling the students to graduate Stanground Academy as well-informed knowledgeable global citizens.

CURRICULUM INTENT

Our History curriculum is unashamedly ambitious in its aim to help pupils makes sense of the world we see today, by exploring the world as it once was.

Our enquiry-based approach ensures that pupils will develop a broadly balanced, and knowledge-rich understanding of British and wider world history and develop an appreciation for the complex and contested nature of History. 

Students will engage with a diverse range of contemporary source material, historical scholarship, and other interpretations of the past as they develop the ability to think critically, ask perceptive questions, weigh evidence and come to reasoned judgements about the past.

Our religious education curriculum aims to give all students an increased awareness of the six major world religions and non-religious world views. 

Students will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to significant human questions, as well as develop their own response. 

Religious education at Stanground Academy gives students opportunity to develop social responsibility through examining their own beliefs about a wide range of moral issues and through understanding different beliefs and cultures to their own.

CURRICULUM INTENT 

The English curriculum is reflective.  We endeavour to continually adapt the curriculum to ensure it represents the pupils we have in front of us.  English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching across all other subjects; for pupils, understanding the language provides access to the whole curriculum.  Through our conceptualised curriculum, we aim to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken word, and to develop their love of literature and widespread reading for enjoyment.

‘Teaching music musically’ is at the forefront of the curriculum vision in the Music department at Stanground Academy. Through devising a diverse, progressive and ambitious curriculum model, students are challenged, inspired and supported in both their musical and personal development. Opportunities are embedded for students to be able to continually hone and develop the practical disciplines of performing and composing, whilst maintaining the academic rigour of the subject through listening, appraising, theory and context. Over time, this will ensure that all students are suitably equipped to access music at each key stage and beyond, regardless of individual starting points. This, in addition to an expanding offer of musical opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom, enables all students to graduate from the Academy with an appreciation for music; a creative, versatile and influential subject that is an integral part of everyday life.

Students who study Criminology at Stanground Academy will experience a curriculum rich in criminological theory and research. Our curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding to real-life criminal justice system contexts and truly engage students in criminological debates.


Students will become confident at looking at things from a range of viewpoints and will participate in experiences beyond the curriculum to become more informed citizens in relation to the law. Not only will this prepare them for further study and training, but it will also ignite their passion for justice and over time develop their critical appreciation of the causes, patterns, and approaches to crime in the UK and beyond.

The Business curriculum will equip all students with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to deal with today's fast-paced and competitive business environment. This subject offers students the opportunity to explore the world of business covering a wide range of topics in collaboration with leading businesses. Students explore all aspects of the business world including practical activities, offering a wide range of learning styles whilst developing their knowledge of the business environment, and abilities to lead as well as team work to set up and run events whilst developing communication and customer service skills. Enabling the improvement of the socio-economic outcomes of students along with their cultural capital and equipping them with enterprise skills that will improve their life chances, whatever path they choose.

CURRICULUM INTENT

The Financial Studies curriculum will equip students with a comprehensive introduction to personal finance, developing the knowledge and skills required to make informed financial decisions by introducing them to the risks and challenges involved in personal finance and the tools for effective planning. Gaining insight into the Importance of financial capability in the immediate, short, medium and long term they will investigate financial services and products, including sources of help and advice along with an understanding of the implications of borrowing, budgeting, financial planning and cash flow forecasting. Along with the impact of external influences at different stages in the personal life cycle as well as the risks and rewards in managing personal finance. The financially related content of this qualification provides a foundation for continued study within the finance sector and a wide range of other business-related disciplines. The transferable skills developed in financial capability are valuable for life enabling students to make informed financial decisions improving their socio-economic outcomes along with their cultural capital which will improve their life chances, whatever, path they choose.

The Health and Social Care curriculum has been designed to allow all students to develop the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a broad range of settings across a wide area of provisions which include statutory, private and third sector settings and cover the science behind treatments and care options. The study of Health and Social Care inspires students and builds foundations for future careers through development of a range of transferable skills along with their cultural capital which enables access to many occupations and success in life.

Our French curriculum aims to raise the status of language learning and to encourage our young people to recognise the valuable cross-curricular life skills that learning a foreign language brings.

Our high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Our curriculum map reflects our high expectations for every child and allows students to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. We believe mathematical intelligence is expandable, and support every student to fulfil their true potential, preparing them for each subsequent key stage. Our aim is to create the conditions for students to solve problems to develop lifelong transferable skills that can be taken to the next stage of their learning journey or workplace. In addition, we aim to ensure our students gain confidence and an appreciation for all the mathematics around them and will exhibit a thirst for mathematical knowledge and learning, modelled by department staff who undertake regular subject-based CPD.
