What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a national charity that encourages young people aged 14 and over to take part in a life-changing adventure. The program encompasses various elements, allowing participants to:

  1. Learn About Their Community and Environment: By engaging with the community and the environment, students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
  2. Become Fitter: Physical fitness is an essential part of the award, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
  3. Develop New Skills: Participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, from cooking to first aid, that can be valuable in life.
  4. Plan, Train For, and Complete an Expedition: The highlight of the award is the expedition, which challenges students to plan and complete a journey, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.

This program isn't just about personal growth; it's also about having fun, making new friends, and boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. In addition, the Duke of Edinburgh Award equips students with crucial attributes for future work and life, including resilience, problem-solving, team-working, and communication skills. Achieving the award can also enhance your CV, college, university, and job applications.

How can I take part at Stanground Academy?

At Stanground Academy, we offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award at both the bronze and silver levels. Year 9 students have the opportunity to participate in the bronze award, while year 10 students can enroll in the silver award program if they've completed their bronze award in year 9.

The journey begins with an assembly in October, where the Duke of Edinburgh program is introduced to our year 9 students. After this, students must complete a short application form to be accepted into the program.

Regardless of the award level, all students must complete four key sections: Expedition, Volunteering, Skills, and Physical. The expedition is organised by the academy and usually takes place on weekends during the summer term. Students are responsible for organising and completing the remaining three sections themselves, dedicating a minimum of 1 hour per week to each during the required time frame.

Commitment is a vital aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh program, not only to yourself but also to your team. This is a six-month journey filled with new experiences, new friendships, exciting activities, and unforgettable memories.
