Remembrance Day 2023

As we approach Remembrance Day 2023, we take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by brave men and women who served and continue to serve in the defence of our freedom. This solemn occasion, observed on the 11th of November each year, holds a special place in our hearts as we remember the courage and commitment of those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nations.

Around the academy, we have flags of over 50 nations hanging up across A-Floor so that we can remember the fallen together. Alongside this, we have various displays across the academy that demonstrate the sacrifices of pupils and staff's family members made for us all.

Remembrance Day, originally commemorating the end of World War I, has since evolved into a day of remembrance for all military personnel who have sacrificed for their countries. The red poppy, inspired by the famous war poem "In Flanders Fields," has become a symbol of hope and remembrance. Mrs. Lavallin created this elegant poppy dress with poppies crocheted by our talented Y11 pupil, Zuzanna. The images below display the making of the dress, alongside its display at our reception with Major Van Lier's dress uniform with attached service medals.

This year, let us come together to honour and pay tribute to the heroes who have selflessly served on the front lines. Whether through virtual ceremonies, community gatherings, or personal reflections, take a moment to express gratitude for the freedom we enjoy today. We were joined by Major Miles, who gave a beautifully heartfelt speech about his dedication, selflessness and commitment throughout his time in the forces, and remembering the fallen.

Our welfare dogs, Sully & Rolo, have also been wearing their own poppies as we remember the wide variety of animals that sacrificed their lives alongside their human colleagues.

As we remember the fallen, let us also acknowledge the resilience of those who have returned home. Many veterans face challenges as they reintegrate into civilian life, and it is crucial that we offer our support and understanding. This link includes articles, podcasts, booklists, websites and teaching resources on remembering the fallen, which our librarian, Miss Coles, has put together.

In a world that often moves swiftly, Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder to slow down, reflect, and express gratitude for the peace we enjoy today, made possible by the sacrifices of many.

"The importance of living values, military values and Stanground Academy values are similar - we have high expectations of others, whether this be in the army, in civilian life or at Stanground. At Stanground we have high expectations of others, whether in school, at work or in our community." - Mr. Van Lier

This Remembrance Day, let us stand united in honouring the past, appreciating the present, and working towards a future of peace and understanding.

Lest we forget.
